Heritage Matters
Bourke Shire, is located 'on the edge of the outback' in the north-western section area of NSW.
Bourke has remained a destination linked to adventure and romance. In 1886 it was described by the Town and Country Journal as 'the Chicago of the West'. In those days up to 50 wagons could be seen parked near the Oxford Hotel, Mitchell Street was the commercial centre of the town and many paddle boats lined up at the three wharfs loading and unloading supplies.
Council's vision to maintain and foster Bourke's growing economic strength recognises the importance that the history and heritage of the past has played, and can continue to play as a source of Cultural Tourism and community pride.
There are currently 34 items of heritage significance listed on Councils Local Environmental Plan (LEP), will several of these items being listed on the State Heritage Register. Please click here to view Council LEP.
